About
What is the Toowoomba Judo Club Inc.
Toowoomba Judo Club Inc. is an incorporated "Not For Profit" association which is run and managed by volunteers.
What is Judo
Jigoro Kano, founded Judo as a modern Japanese martial art in 1882. Being a modern martial art, Judo does not use weapons to overcome an opponent. When judo is practised as a sport, competitors use throwing and grappling techniques which are permitted by the rules of competition however, when judo is applied in self-defence, a much broader range of judo techniques may be used.
Kano wrote and taught many maxims in which he described his intentions of how judo is to be taught and practised. Two of his most notable maxims are his maxim of maximum efficiency and his maxim of mutual welfare.
To describe the maxim of maximum efficiency Kano asserted that that a person who uses their optimal physical and mental energy can defeat an opponent who may have considerably physical strength.
Kano's maxim on mutual repect extends to mutual welfare. To explain this maxim , Kano insisted that judo be practised respectfully and safely so that judo players would not be injured during practice. This developed a culture that all judo players would respect each other and that all players would consider the welfare of of other players when practising so that the other player will receive the technque safely and not be injured. .
Kano asserted that these principles of his maxims contributed towards the human and social development of the individual and towards a better modern society.
He reflected his intentions and principles when he named his new martial art by taking the name ju-jutsu replacing the word "jutsu" (meaning "technique" )with the suffix "do" (meaning "path" or "way").
Kano also asserts that a judo player who practices judo with a balance of these above principles will reach a greater personal optimum efficiency.
The aim of Toowoomba Judo Club
The aim of the Toowoomba Judo Club Inc. is to provide and foster to the Toowoomba community a safe, friendly, and healthy environment to play and practice judo in.

Courses/Classes
To optimise the learning and enjoyment of judo players, the club allocates judo players to courses which are matched in accordance with the individual player's level of skill and development. The club's Senior Instructor will conduct an interview and assessment with each judo player to determine the course which best fits the needs of the player.
The club will depending on resources, conduct training classes of combined courses or when resources are available conduct training classes exclusively for a particular course.
All courses are conducted in accordance with a schedule and accordingly it is the responsibility of each judo student to attend each lesson/class to ensure that they progress in accordance with the learning program of the course. Judo students who do not attend all classes and do not maintain at least 80 percent attendance each month are at risk of falling behind the class and may have to repeat a course or arrange for Special Lessons to catch up. (see "Special Lessons" below.)
The club will host the following courses for player members on a needs basis. When class numbers the club may combine classes from two or more courses so that classes are viable and that continuity of learning is maintained for the judo player.
The club does not offer any guarantee that all participants will successfully complete a course and be awarded any qualification or rank promotion.
It is strongly emphasised that maintaining punctual and regular attendance to all course classes is a key factor to successfully completing the course.
Students are requested to notify the club if the are unable to attend a class so that the instructor can make appropriate adjustments to the lesson plan.
Students should also be aware that if they have an irregular attendance pattern that they run the risk of losing their position in the class which may be allocated to another person.
